Strip Mall Retrofits

Project Description

Teamed up with DPZ Codesign, I have worked on many projects that are on the sites of dead or failing strip malls and big box stores. Rather than completely tear them down and start over, we often try to use the existing structure in some way. Sometimes only the shell or skeleton is preserved, other times we may keep the entire building and add onto and renovate it. In many cases, the large parking lots are developed, and it makes sense to keep the entire buildings and their tenants, but adapt them to fit into a more urban mixed use environment. Shown below are real projects using all of these strategies, from Austin, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
