Boston Rooftop Solarium

Project Description

The client for this project owned the penthouse unit in one of Boston’s most iconic buildings, the Macallen. Part of the unit was a large roof deck with a stair house for access. He wanted to add a small room onto this small existing structure in order to get more enjoyment out of this roof top space with such magnificent views. We wanted to create something with a real indoor/outdoor feel, able to be completely opened up, or closed and weather tight for the colder months. We explored many design options and configurations, some of them shown below. This project required extensive work obtaining a zoning variance to allow a rooftop addition, and was complex from a structural standpoint, attaching to the existing building in such a way as to mitigate uplift forces.
